Thanks to Apple, the launch of every new smartphone has become an event. First a theatrical press conference, then a period of anticipation, finally the product in the hands of consumers and reviewers. It’s a hype cycle orchestrated by Marketing followed by a reality check from the market itself.

That’s where we come in. Taykey is the reality check checker, processing about two billions online conversations a day with artificial neural net technology and natural language processing capabilities. This gives us a mountain of data with which to ask some interesting questions.

Here, we looked at how sentiment changes during the week prior to and after the on-sale dates of the four biggest recent phone launches to see what happens when anticipation ends and the real world takes over. First, a graphic with the big picture, and then a short discussion.
