The Week in Online Trends

Much of last week’s online chatter was driven by tentpole events, including the Academy of Country Music awards and the NCAA Basketball finals. We closed out the week with major buzz surrounding the American Idol series finale on Thursday night.  Read on for our summary of the week in online trends, culled from Taykey’s analysis of millions of online conversations across the web. Academy of Country Music Awards (peaked on 4/4)
The ACMs captured a significant share of online attention on Monday as people fawned over Miranda Lambert’s and Carrie Underwood’s red carpet choices. This conversation was driven primarily by women, age group from 18 to 34.

 

Villanova’s NCAA Win (peaked on 4/5)
The Villanova Wildcats’ buzzer-beating win over UNC for the national championship generated a strong reaction across the web on Tuesday. Interest was evenly distributed across all age groups, with a nearly 80% male audience.

 

Wisconsin Primary Results (peaked on 4/6)
Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders’ victories in the Wisconsin primary drove a high volume of political buzz on Wednesday. Interest in this trend skewed toward older age brackets, while interest was split evenly between men and women.

 

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer Release (peaked on 4/7)
Last week’s online trends bode well for the success of the next highly anticipatedStar War’s prequel, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.The release of the film’s first teaser trailer was trending among all age groups on Thursday, with a significant male skew.

 

American Idol Series Finale (peaked on 4/8)
American Idol’s final episode generated several trending conversations on Friday. Much of the online chatter was centered on the return of the show’s biggest stars including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery, and Jordin Sparks. Online conversation sentiment was overwhelmingly positive, even for the notoriously cranky Simon Cowell (see trend at left). While ages of people talking about the show were fairly distributed, the audience skewed female.
